Activity 1: The Waiata - Song in Your Heart
I chose the waitata - He hōnore, he korōria. It is often sung at a powhiri. I sing this song at kapa haka.
The words mean that men come together and think happy thoughts and think about God.
Activity 2 Playing games
(i) name of the game, (ii) the goal or purpose of the game, and (iii) two rules.
The name of the game I chose was Poi Toa.
The purpose of the game is to throw the poi to other people on your team and score points by throwing it into the goal.
Two rules are
- If you stop swinging the poi around you have to pass it to the other team.
- You can take no more than 3 steps with the poi before you have to throw it.
Activity 3
Bonus Activity: Musical Festivals – Matatini
Tamatea Arikinui came first. I liked this one because they used the poi and they didn't stand still.
Te Iti Kuhangi came third because they were standing still and just singing.
Te Puku o Te Ika came second because they did more moving than the song that came third. The men did some dancing too.

Activity 1: He honore is an awesome song. Such beautiful lyrics I completely agree. I often hear it at assemblies too. Good on you for being part of a Kapa Haka group at school too! I was when I was younger.
What do you like most about being in Kapa haka?
Activity 2: That sounds like a very fun but tricky game. Seems to me like you would need a lot of practice and skill. Do you play this game in class or at Kapa Haka group?
When I was at school everyone loved playing Koruru Taonga. Very challenging but fun game to play!
Activity 3: I like Tamatea Arikinui the most too! They must have practice so much to become so skilled at poi! Do you get to use poi in your Kapa Haka group? What did you think of this groups singing?
Te Puku o Te Ika were a pretty cool group too but I wish they had done some dancing or actions to go with their beautiful song.
