Day 3 - Activity 1 and 2

Would you enjoy being a member of a large family?

Yes,  I would enjoy being part of larger family because there would be a lot of people to play with, not just my boring sister! However I would have to share my room and we would have spend more money on food, but it would be fun!

Activity 3

My favourite food is burgers. Beef burgers,          hamburgers, chicken burgers and fish burgers!

My dad makes the best home made burgers ever!!!
I love burgers because they have bread, meat and vegetables in them - a mini meal!

Burgers, chips and strawberry milk - please!

And for dessert.... chocolate eclairs.

Day 2 Activity 1

Wharepuni / My house

 SIMILARITIES

They both have  -
  1. walls
  2. roof

DIFFERENCES
  1. A wharepuni has 1 room but my house has lots of rooms.
  2. There were sometimes sculptures outside the wharepuri.
Day 2 Activity 2

When I'm older... I want to be a farmer because you get to have a lot of space to have animals and crops. I would grow wheat to make bread and sweetcorn because it is yummy. I would have sheep, cows and pigs. I would need a horse to ride around the farm on. My tractor would be green.

Toby SLJ Day 1 Activity 2+3

🌎           Toby's Summer Learning Journey    🌎

Day 1 Activity 2 and 3
Activity 2

Dear Cordell

I am going to a new land on my waka and I have been paddling for a whole week. At night I use the stars to find the directions to the new land. I have 10 men on my waka with me so we have been going very fast.  I am a bit scared sailing somewhere new because there might be people that want to fight us and dangerous animals.

From Warrior Toby

Activity 3

I would like to be in a Waka Ama race because it look like a lot of fun. It is also good exercise and I would get very fit paddling the waka with my friends and family.

Day 1
Maui wanted to go fishing with his brothers but they didn't let him come with them. So Maui hid in his brothers canoe and when they had lowered the anchor he jumped out.

He used his grandmother's jawbone to fish up part of Aotearoa. The jawbone was covered in his own blood.

The north island is the fish that Maui pulled up. Maui's canoe is the south island.

Winter Learning Journey Day 7

The best activities around New Zealand with Curious Kiwi
The Otago Central Bike Trail was my favourite activity  because I like biking. I would like to do the whole of the trail (yes - all 150 km!) when I am older.

The black sand beach at Karekare was my second favourite activity because I love to go to the beach and build dams out off sand and drift wood.

It was fun seeing the different animals at the Otorohanga bird house and learning all about tuatara. I also liked finding out about Sir Edmund Hillary.

I have really enjoyed learning 'how to blog' and having an audience from all around the world. It has been fabulous!

I am going to keep on blogging and sharing my writing with readers around the world.

Winter Learning Journey Day 7 Activity 2

What do I like to do to relax?

I like to read or be read to. I like to make pictures in my head as I read. Geronimo Stilton books are great because they are funny and they have pictures.

Winter Learning Journey Day 7

Keeping New Zealand beautiful

At home we try to

  • reuse old cardboard to make stuff. I have made a boat and a shield out of old cardboard.
  •  feed the worms our food scraps. The worms give us good plant growing soil.
  • take plastic bags back to the supermarket so they can be recycled.

Winter Learning Journey Day 6

All Blacks Haka Performances

I rated them as follows

World Cup 2015 – All Blacks vs Argentina
(I like this one the most so - 1st)

All Blacks vs South Africa 2016 (This one came 2nd)

(I liked this one the least so 3rd)

Winter Learning Journey Day 6

Matariki Festival in Wellington.

I enjoyed the festival and learnt that Makariki is a time for friends and family to get together to celebrate the Maori New Year.

The three things I did were:

  • I tried out the food. The food was super.

  • I watched the fireworks on the Wellington waterfront.

  • I explored the Maori culture and traditions by weaving a kite out of flax.

Winter Learning Journey Day 6

My acrostic poem based on Shag Point.

Scared
Hungry
And
Glad they came

Paddling the waka
Opening their eyes to the
Interesting
New land
Taking time to thank Auta (God).

Winter Learning Day 5

Otago Rail Trail

I would like to go on the Otago Rail trail because

  1. I can get fit and ride my bike. I love my bike!
  2. It's off road so we will not see any cars.
  3. We will get to see AMAZING views of the South Island.

Winter Learning Journey Day 5

SIR EDMUND HILLARY

Here is Sir Edmund Hillary on the $5 note.

Born: 20th July 1919
Died:11th January 2008. He was 88 when he died.
Why is he famous? He was one of the first two people to get to the top of Mount Everest. Mount Everest is 29,029 feet tall!
Interesting facts: He was 6 feet 5 inches tall.
He was the first man to use vehicles to get to the South Pole.

Winter Learning Journey Day 5

One step at a time
What happened next:

I felt scared because I was alone. I knew we were going north so i set my compass to north and I kept on going. I hoped I might catch up with Curious Kiwi. "WHERE ARE YOU?" I called out. There was no answer! I felt VERY VERY scared. I ran back to the car park and I saw Curious Kiwi having his morning tea. "Hello Curious Kiwi" I called out. "WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?"

Winter Learning journey Day 4

Swimming with the sharks

The Whale Rider - I did not think it looked like a good movie.
2 ** (stars) from me. It might be better for big kids.

The movie was about a Maori tribe. The Maori tribe were waiting for a new chief or leader. The koro (grandfather) wanted a boy for the leader but the boy died and the daughter was still alive. The koro did not want the girl to be leader of the tribe. I liked the tribal things in the movie, like when they fought with the taiaha - Maori long sticks though.

Winter Learning Journey Day 4

Swimming with the sharks

How did the local people at Farewell Spit help the stranded whales?

  • They poured water on the whales from buckets and bottles.
  • They put wet towels on them to stop them over heating.
  • The local people checked the whales to see if the blow hole was clear and stayed away from their tails.
  • Some people dug holes around the whales and filled them with water.

Winter Learning Journey Day 3

Should NZ be predator free?

I think New Zealand should be pest free.

1) No predators = less endangered animals.

2) Trees and forest will not get eaten by possums making New Zealand more green.

3) Possums spread diseases amongst cattle. In New Zealand we eat our cattle, we do not want to eat cattle with diseases.

Winter Learning Journey Day 3

Otorohanga Kiwi House and Native Bird Park

Adopt an animal critter: I will adopt a tuatara.

It looks like a lizard but it is a reptile. Its closest relative is an extinct dinosaur. Tuatara is a Maori word meaning 'spiny back' or 'peaks on its back'. A tuatara eats other animals like wetas, beetles, moths and small lizards. Tuataras used to live all over New Zealand, but now live only on islands off the coast that have no predators. They can swim and are noctural - this means they come out at night.

Winter Learning Journey Bonus activity Day 2

Winter Learning Journey Day 2

I talked to my mum about what she likes to do outside.

1) Go on bike rides with the family.

2) Calm beach trips for paddling and swimming to Devonport or Pt Chev.

3) Big wave beach trips for boogie boarding at Tawharanui.

4) Walking up the local volcanoes.

5) Family camping trips by the beach.

Day 2 Winter Learning Journey

Laura Dekker Questions

1) How old were you when you learnt to sail?

2) Why did you want to sail around the world?

3) Why is your boat called Guppy and did you name her?

4) What is the biggest fish or animal you have seen at sea?

5) Did you get frightened at night when you were at sea?

Winter Learning Journey Day 2

New Zealand by Land and Sea

My favourite place to visit was Karekare beach.

Diary/Blog

I went for a walk on the BLACK sand at Karekare. The beach went on and on for miles and miles. I took off my shoes and went paddling in the water. The sea was a bit cold. I did not go swimming because there were big waves and no life guards on duty. The waves were rolling into me, carrying tiny white spiral shells. The sky was blue with absolutely no clouds. Seagulls were flying high in the sky. I had a picnic lunch on the beach. Afterwards I made a dam with driftwood. It was a brilliant day out.

Winter Learning Journey Day 1

100% Pure New Zealand

Day 1 Activity 3

Toby's Flag

The green background is for the green trees and the grass in New Zealand.

The red diagonal lines are for the paths through New Zealand. It also shows the 4 main cultures of New Zealand who have made this country home, the Maori people, Pacific Islanders, Asians and Europeans .

The bird is because we have a lot of birds in New Zealand - there was no kiwi, but I would like it to be one.
