SLJ Week 3 Day 3 Activity 1

🌎           Toby's Summer Learning Journey    🌎

Activity 1 - Ready to Roll

I rated the videos

3) Least favourite - Golden Harvest (I was not very keen on the sparkly pants and the super hero cape!)

2) Ray Columbus and the Invaders - This one was a bit more fun. Did you see you the man in the left top corner? He was swinging backwards and forwards while playing his guitar!

1) The best was New Zealand Underdogs - the first bit made me laugh because they pulled funny faces. They were singing about trees and their video was filmed in the trees!

Activity 3 - Snail Mail

My postcard is a photo of Rangitoto Island. You can see the island from Auckland City. Did you know Rangitoto is Auckland's youngest volcano? It last erupted around 600 years ago. I'm glad I wasn't there to see to see it!

SLJ Week 3 Day 2 Activity 1 and 2

🌎           Toby's Summer Learning Journey    🌎

Activity 1
The Dawn of Television
My favourite TV programme is Danger Mouse. It is on Prime. Danger Mouse is a mouse and a secret agent. He has an assistant Penfold (a hamster). The villains in the programme are Baron Silas Greenback (a frog) and his pet caterpilliar. Greenback's assistant is Stiletto Mafiosa, who is a black crow. Danger Mouse's job is stop the villains from destroying the world. He has a flying car that can turn into a boat to help him catch the bad guys.

Activity 2
Rock 'n' Roll

Seven thousand people (mostly young women) were waiting to see The Beatles when their plane landed in Wellington.

The band were taken into the hotel secretly and taken straight up to the third floor balcony ,so fans wouldn't run into the hotel.

Despite the fuss when The Beatles arrived, two band members went  off to see family that lived in New Zealand.

SLJ Week 3 Day 1 Activity 1 and 2

🌎           Toby's Summer Learning Journey    🌎

Activity 1
Meat and three veg

I don't think I would like to eat meat and three veg every day. There should not be so many vegetables on my plate! In our family we eat meat but we mix it up with brown rice, cous cous and wraps. We don't eat potatoes very much.

Activity 2
What's in a name?

At my school there are 2 people called William and 2 people called Mya/Maia. There are 3 people called Angel. We also have a Tevita and a Tavita, they are called Tevita P and Tavita A!

We also have 3 sets of twins in our school!

SLJ Week 2 Day 5 Activity 1 and 2

🌎           Toby's Summer Learning Journey    🌎
Activity 1
VE Day

To celebrate the end of the war I would

  • have a bonfire party and a barbeque (VE day was in the middle of New Zealand Winter after all!) The party might go on late into the night! If the weather was really good we might go for a swim in the sea.
I would invite all my friends and family and the people in my street.

Activity 2 - Making a fashion Statement

I think the children's clothes look ridiculous because you can't go out and play in those clothes very easily. The clothes for the children look very smart but uncomfortable to wear.  I would feel silly wearing those clothes because I like wearing easy clothes like a t-shirt and shorts.

In the future I hope there will be no school uniform because I hope there will be NO SCHOOL! My Mum says perhaps we will be able to learn like we are at school from wherever we are in the country!

SLJ Week 2 Day 4 Activity 1 and 2

🌎           Toby's Summer Learning Journey    🌎

Activity 1
An eventful experience

The 1st Enemy strike for the NZ Navy
On the 13th December 1939 a NZ Navy boat called the HMS Achilles hit an enemy German boat called Graf Spee. HMS Achilles was the first NZ navy boat to take part in a battle and to hit the enemy in World War 2.
 NZ Navy - HMS Achilles

VE Day - The war ended on 7th May 1945 but was not announced until 8th May 1945. New Zealand did not celebrate the end of the war until 9th May. They were told by the acting Prime Minister to go to work on the 8th May and had to wait until they were told that the war was over before they could celebrate!

Activity 2
A Call to Arms (I chose someone from the 1st world war - reason given below!)

I read about Private Henry Nicholas who got the VC on the 11th Jan 1917. He was awarded it in July 1917 by King George V. I chose him because his last name is the same as my dad's first name.

Why did he get the Victoria Cross
On the 3rd December 1916 Private Henry Nicholas from the 1st Batallion Canterbury Infantry Regiment killed 12 Germans using hand grenades and a bayonet and captured 4 Germans in Polderhoek, Belgium.

Henry Nicholas was born on the 11 June 1891 and died on 23rd October 1918 (three weeks before the end of the war). He was just 27 when he died.

SLJ Week 2 Day 3 Activity 2 and 3

🌎           Toby's Summer Learning Journey    🌎
Activity 2
Offering a helping Hand
Imagine that you were alive in the 1930s. What could you have done to help these families? On your blog, list three different ways that you could raise funds for families to help them buy food and clothing. Be as creative as you can with your fundraising ideas!

Sausage sizzle (I would need to ask shops to donate the food so I didn't have to buy it because we're trying to make money!)
⭐ Raffle (Again I would need to ask shops to donate toys (like a big Lego set) so I could put it in the raffle)
⭐ Baking at home - I could make some biscuits at home to sell. To make a bigger amount of money I could ask my friends to bake food to sell.
Activity 3
Paying it forward
Imagine that you were able to travel back in time to visit a family in the 1930s. What special gifts or treats would you like to bring with you?

I would take back

  • medicine (in case some people were sick)
  • glow sticks.because they are lots of fun for kids
  • chocolate (like Snickers, Milky way and Pineapple lumps
  • torch and batteries
  • A Lego set from today
  • Snakes and Ladders game
  • A newspaper

SLJ Week 2 Day 3 Activity 1

🌎           Toby's Summer Learning Journey    🌎
Activity 1
Dealing with Stress

To deal with stress I like to
  • build Lego models
  • cuddle my special soft toy (Puppy)
  • jump on the trampoline outside
  • read a book (I like reading Zac Powers books and Mr Gum)
  • fly the remote control helicopter (inside) or drive my remote control car (outside)

SLJ Week 2 Day 2 Activity 1 and 2

🌎           Toby's Summer Learning Journey    🌎
Activity 1

Activity 1: Popular Culture – The Silent Movie

The most popular type of movies showing at local NZ cinemas were ‘silent’ films. Gold Rush and The Lion's Cage are examples of iconic silent films. They feature a famous actor named Charlie Chaplin.

I liked The Lion's Cage the best because he got stuck in a lions cage and could not get out! Lots of funny things happened in the movie. The best part was when he tried to get put of the lion's cage and found himself in the tiger's cage next door. The tiger was awake and he figured he would rather be with a sleeping lion than an awake tiger!

Activity 2 - Art Deco

I gave the painting a rating of ⭐⭐
I thought the painting was a bit boring because it was a girl in a car and there was nothing else to look at.

SLJ Week 2 Day - Activity 1, 2 and 3

🌎           Toby's Summer Learning Journey    🌎
Activity 1

This cathedral is called Saint Basil's Cathedral or the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed.

It is in Red Square in Moscow, Russia.

They started building it in 1555 and finished building it in 1561. It took 6 years to build.

I chose this cathedral because it looks bright in the dark. I also like the roof, it looks like it might come from India. It is now a museum.

Activity 2

What you think about the fact that women were not allowed to vote in Saudi Arabia until 2015. Is it fair? Why or why not?

I think women should be allowed to vote so they can help choose who will rule their country. If they don't get to vote I think they should not have to listen to the president and do as he says.

Activity 3

Flanders Fields

The poem made me feel happy and sad. It made me feel happy because the men fought for us so we would be alive.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

This verse made me feel sad because so many people lost their lives. Many men never came back to our beautiful country but they died fighting for us.

Week 1 Day 5 Activity 3

🌎           Toby's Summer Learning Journey    🌎

Bill Kini won a gold medal for New Zealand at the 1966 Commonwealth Games in heavyweight boxing. He also played rugby in Ōtāhuhu in the 1960s and captained the Auckland Maori rugby team.

If I could ask Bill 4 questions I would want to know -

1) How many medals or belts did you win in your career?

2) Which sport did you like better - boxing or rugby and why?

3) Did you have to follow a special diet?

4) What was your greatest sporting achievement? Was it in boxing or rugby?

Day 5 Activity 1 and 2

🌎           Toby's Summer Learning Journey    🌎

Activity 1: Translating Phrases

Nau mai ki Aotearoa -  Welcome to New Zealand.

_______ is my name. Ko Toby toku ingoa

What is your name? He aha to ingoa?

He pai taku ki te takaro i te whutupaoro. I like to play rugby.

Where do you come from? No hea koe?

Activity 2: The Treaty of Waitangi

If I went to the Waitangi Treaty grounds I would like to see the kapa haka performance, look at the largest Maori war canoe and look up at the meeting house to see the carvings.

Day 4 Activity 1, 2 and 3

🌎           Toby's Summer Learning Journey    🌎

Activity 1: The Waiata - Song in Your Heart

I chose the waitata - He hōnore, he korōria. It is often sung at a powhiri. I sing this song at kapa haka.
The words mean that men come together and think happy thoughts and think about God.

Activity 2 Playing games

(i) name of the game, (ii) the goal or purpose of the game, and (iii) two rules.

The name of the game I chose was Poi Toa.

The purpose of the game is to throw the poi to other people on your team and score points by throwing it into the goal.

Two rules are
  1. If you stop swinging the poi around you have to pass it to the other team.
  2. You can take no more than 3 steps with the poi before you have to throw it.

Activity 3
Bonus Activity: Musical Festivals – Matatini

Tamatea Arikinui came first. I liked this one because they used the poi and they didn't stand still.

Te Iti Kuhangi came third because they were standing still and just singing.

Te Puku o Te Ika came second because they did more moving than the song that came third. The men did some dancing too.

Day 3 Activity 3 What makes your family special?

🌎           Toby's Summer Learning Journey    🌎

Day 3

Everyone’s family is unique. What makes your family special?

The three people I chose were:

Michael - my cousin who is visiting from England.

Mahala - my cousin who is visiting from England, Michael's sister.

My dad - Nick who works at Chelsea Sugar Factory

This summer Michael has really enjoyed playing at Cave Rock in Sumner and spending time with his family.
Did you know Michael does Latin and French at school?

Mahala likes riding her horse down to the stream to keep cool in the summer. She also likes bathing Magic with the hose.
Did you know Mahala has a horse and a cat called Magic? I hope Mahala doesn't get muddled up and start riding Magic the cat! Mahala also has lots of 'a's in her name - 3 to be precise!

Dad likes looking after his tomatoes in the summer. He also likes spending time with his family. Did you know my dad has 2 boats? One is a sail boat and the other one has an engine. I like the motor boat best because it goes faster and is more fun. You can also go fishing on it, it has 5 fishing rod holders all around the boat.
